In 1904, the trailblazers of the Hebrew Order of David established a branch of the Hebrew Order of Druids in South Africa. Originating in England in 1896, the Hebrew Order of Druids served as the model for this venture.
This initiative occurred in the aftermath of the conclusion of the South African War of 1889-1902. During this period, local conditions in South Africa were generally uninviting for immigrant Jews, particularly those from Eastern Europe. Consequently, there arose a pressing need among these immigrants to form closer bonds within their community, enhance their economic standing, and adapt to the unfamiliar and often unwelcoming surroundings.
On Sunday, November 27, 1904, the Dr. Herzl Lodge No. 19 of the Hebrew Order of Druids was consecrated during a ceremony held at the Empress Victoria Hotel on Marshall Street in Johannesburg.
Worshipful Brother Joseph Distiller, the esteemed founder of the Hebrew Order of David, arrived in South Africa following the conclusion of the South African War (Boer War). Prior to his arrival, he had been affiliated with a comparable organization named the Hebrew Order of Druids in London.
Born in 1873 near Warsaw, Poland, Wor Bro Joseph dedicated his life to the Order’s cause. His unwavering determination, constructive approach, and passionate commitment marked his journey within the Order. He remained an ardent worker, tirelessly contributing to its growth and ideals until his passing in Durban, South Africa, on August 19, 1938.
The Order changed its name by majority vote on 16 November 1919 and by the end of 1921 the Order assumed the rightful title of the Hebrew Order of David
Worshipful Brother Louis Faiga was an integral figure alongside Wor Bro Joseph Distiller in establishing and nurturing the growth of the Order across South Africa.
Originally from Praszka, Poland, Wor Bro Louis arrived in South Africa in 1896. His service in the Rhodesian Volunteers and his ascent to the rank of sergeant in the Transvaal Cycle and Motor Corps showcased his commitment and leadership.
Notably, Wor Bro Louis played a foundational role in the local Zionist Society and held significant positions within the Order. He served as the Grand Master of Ceremonies, founded the Sir Harry Graumann Lodge in Benoni, and held the esteemed position of Grand President of the Order from 1914 to 1915.
His dedicated contributions continued until his passing in December 1939, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and leadership within the Order.
