HOD Lodge Shimshon Supports Backpack Buddies

The Hebrew Order of David (HOD) has a strong tradition of community service and support, demonstrated through its recent collaboration with Backpack Buddies. Ron Robbins, the founder of Backpack Buddies, shared the organization’s mission of providing weekend meals to food-insecure youth at a meeting of the HOD Lodge Shimshon of North Fulton earlier this year. This resonated deeply with the lodge’s members, aligning with their commitment to making a local impact.

Under the leadership of President Scott Scher and Vice President Jeff Budd, Lodge Shimshon decided to actively support Backpack Buddies. They began monthly volunteering sessions, packing over 200 meals on Sunday mornings, followed by bonding over breakfast, fostering camaraderie among lodge brothers while giving back to the community.

Recognizing the need for financial support, the lodge initiated a fundraising campaign. Jody Pollack, CEO of the Atlanta Kosher BBQ Festival, joined hands with the lodge and made a generous donation on behalf of the festival. Collectively, the lodge raised $4,000 for Backpack Buddies, estimated to provide meals for more than 400 youth for a weekend.

On December 11th, after a volunteering session, Lodge Shimshon presented Ron Robbins with a check symbolizing their commitment. Jeff Budd expressed gratitude, emphasizing the honor in supporting Backpack Buddies and the joy in contributing firsthand through volunteering. He affirmed the lodge’s dedication to continuing this support.

President Scott Scher highlighted the significance of this partnership, sharing his excitement upon discovering Backpack Buddies’ mission and recognizing the perfect match for the lodge’s charitable efforts.

Established in 2014, Lodge Shimshon in Johns Creek extends its support across Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, and the broader North Fulton area. Beyond their collaboration with Backpack Buddies, the lodge actively engages in various community initiatives such as the Yellow Candle Project, Matzo Ball Mitzvah program, and the Atlanta Kosher BBQ Festival. Additionally, it offers regular social programs for its members, fostering a strong and engaged community within the lodge.
